Why We Live Here
by 24
Now is the time to enjoy all that the Florida Keys have to offer. It is also an opportunity to make good on all those promises made to friends to take them fun-fishing. The days are long and the options are plentiful.
I like to get out as the sun is rising. This is the best time to find small tarpon rolling. These fish will readily take flies and small lures. Many times you can find them in a morning shrimp hatch. If you see the birds working, there is a chance that the tarpon will be underneath. Get it done quickly! As soon as it starts, the clock is ticking. It can end as suddenly as it starts. I like these mornings, back at the dock early after putting a few fish in the air. It’s hasn’t gotten too hot and you’re back in time for breakfast.
If an early morning isn’t your thing, grab the lobster gear and a couple of fly rods and head out a little later. I like to use these days to explore new areas looking for potential bonefish and permit spots. While poling around always be on the look out for lobster cracks and holes. Jump in, cool off and try to get dinner!
For the next couple of months we are fortunate to have good weather, good water and great times in the Keys. So get out there and explore! I guarantee you will have many moments that make you say, “ This is why we live here!”
