Trips Like This
On a recent trip aboard the “B ’n’ M”, our friend Jeff brought one of his coworkers from Oklahoma out. Robert had never been on the ocean before, so I knew it was going to be a fun day. Jeff said he wasn’t catching a fish until Robert caught a few, or if we hooked multiple fish at one time. We started out the day catching bait and then put the kites up for sailfish. Within the first hour, Robert caught a couple of kingfish, so he was already happy. You could imagine the difference between that and fishing in a lake back home. We were getting ready to make a move and then, sure enough, a sailfish ate one of the baits. Robert battled a 50 lb. sailfish for the next 20 minutes and the fish put on an amazing show. The sailfish raced all over the ocean and jumped close to 20 times! We got the leader and held the fish boat side for a few seconds before releasing him. Robert was stoked and I think he found out pretty quickly why so many of us here are obsessed with fishing! About 30 minutes later, Robert hooked another sailfish, and then Jeff came back and he hooked up too! We released both of those fish after 30 minutes and everybody was smiling. After that, we looked for cobia for a little while, but had no luck. Jeff said he’d love to see Robert catching something really big, so we rigged up for Goliath grouper. As he sat in the chair waiting, Jeff caught a nice blackfin tuna on a surface bait. We didn’t get a bite on the big rod on the first stop, so we moved to try one more spot. We sent down a king mackerel for bait and waited. Right when we were going to call it a day, we hooked up! It acted funny and, after 5 five minutes, Robert had a big nurse shark up by the boat. Sure, it wasn’t a maneater, but for someone who has never been on the ocean, it was still a neat fish and a 7’ long shark! Trips like this make every charter captain appreciate what they do.
