The Summer Sizzle is On

by 8

Is it hot out or is it just me? July definitely is the start of the true summer sizzle and with that heat comes some more great fishing. Tarpon are still on the bridges and nearshore flats and channels but will start to move out of the area near the end of the month. You still have time to catch that trophy Silver King. The offshore bite remains good to excellent with lots of dolphin and tuna around along with the occasional billfish and wahoo. Leaving early tends to payoff big as the surface water offshore is cooler at first light after mixing all night. By mid to late afternoon it all becomes hot and a little less attractive to migrating pelagic species. On the reef, the yellowtail snapper bite is very good along with grouper and a host of other species too numerous to name. This is a great venue for families or first time anglers as the action is consistent and it can easily be accomplished in a half or three quarter day. The mangrove snapper fishing on the reef is nearing full throttle. Mangroves are great eating and amazingly strong fighting fish. One of my many favorites to catch. You know you’re doing it right when your average fish is 3-5 lbs. and the bigger ones are pushing 6-8 lbs. Mangrove snapper will test your skill as an angler because they are smart and will not eat heavy line. You need to get light with your tackle to catch these bad boys. It’s lots of fun. The wreck fishing always provides a variety of big fish this time of year and you never know what you will hook up. From African pompano to amberjack, mutton snapper to grouper - it’s all good. Let’s not forget lobster mini season is the last Wednesday and Thursday of the month. Time to go get those tasty crustaceans! Happy 4th of July! Stay cool and enjoy the best the Keys have to offer!!
