Islamorada Offshore Report
There is superb fishing off Islamorada , fishing the reef, trolling, deep dropping or sword fishing. Many charter boats in Whale Harbor are catching impressive fish daily. Mahi have been the fish of choice lately, and have been caught in a variety of depths. Each fishing day has required searching the offshore water of Islamorada for telltale signs of mahi schools. Low flying birds, floating debris, current edges and weed lines have been great places to find these exciting fish. It has not been unusual to encounter massive numbers of fish that vary in size. One way to segregate the larger fish from the small fish is to hook up four or more fish and pull them in the same direction that the school is moving. Slowly increase speed and the larger fish will often follow closer to the boat. At this point feed them your bait and enjoy the fun. Off Shore Forecast Abundant summer fishing for mahi offshore of Islamorada will hopefully continue. Recent catches may not guarantee future productivity, but the great fishing we’ve had leads many to believe it will continue throughout the summer. Anglers are looking forward to more mahi, wahoo and blackfin tuna. Back Country Fishing Report Fishing for tarpon is the main focus around Islamorada right now. Tarpon of all sizes are being caught with regularity in channels and around the flats throughout the Florida Keys. Close to Whale Harbor, the tarpon are abundant around the bridge. Every evening the carcasses from nearby fishing fleets are disposed of in the area waters. The tarpon and sharks are there to consume them. It is an amazing site to witness hundreds of pound of fish heads and bones disappear in minutes. Fishing near this event in the evening around the bridge is very easy - landing them is another story. Smaller boats have the advantage of chasing a hooked fish under the bridge. This ability to pursue the tarpon normally results in a successful catch, photograph and release.
