Fishing Guides Join Costa to Kick Plastic
The Lower Keys Guides Association (LKGA) joins Costa to support the company’s Kick Plastic campaign and help educate consumers and businesses throughout the Keys about the plastic problem.
“This isn’t some distant problem, this is an issue that directly impacts all of us in the sport fishing industry,” said Costa’s Al Perkinson. “Simple changes such as carrying a reusable bag to the store, drinking out of a reusable water bottle and recycling the plastic we do use can significantly reduce the amount of trash making its way into our oceans.”
About KICK PLASTIC Americans may be recycling more than ever before, but we’re also making more trash than ever before. So even though we’re getting better, our oceans continue to get worse— strangled by plastic bottles, bags and other trash. Fishermen are in a unique position to do something about it. The oceans are our backyard, our playground, and this is one way we can keep an eye on them.
As a manufacturer, many of Costa’s products are made with plastic. When they began this project, company officials realized they had some work to do. Moving forward, Costa is reducing packaging where it’s possible, using more recycled materials and continuing to explore and implement other solutions for the future.
By helping to spread the word and reducing our reliance on disposable packaging, Costa is setting an example in this fight against ocean trash and the company plans to gradually kick its plastic habit completely.
By partnering with organizations like LKGA, Costa is bringing the message to those who work on the water and can influence their peers, clients and others in the community.
“We can all do more to reduce our use of plastic,” said Capt. Luke Kelly, a seasoned fishing guide and president of LKGA. “Keeping disposable plastics off our boats and out of the water is a no brainer. We can all do more off the water as well. Pass on the plastic bags, and remember to recycle, re-use, and restore!”
What You Can Do to Eliminate Plastic
- Stop using plastic bottles. A reusable bottle is better for the environment, more cost efficient and keeps your drink colder longer.
- Say goodbye to single-use grocery bags. Plastic grocery bags can be replaced with reusable ones. Yes, even produce bags.
- Buying in bulk makes a big impact. Sometimes we don’t notice the amount of packaging that comes with each product, but it adds up pretty fast.
- Take plastic out of takeout. Decline bags and utensils when ordering takeout. You can even ask restaurants to pack food in your own containers.
- Reel in old line. Change your fishing line routinely to keep old, stretched line out of our oceans where it can harm sea life.
