Controlled Chaos
I have high hopes that August is going to be an exciting month this year. I think we are going to see some nice schools of mahi mahi. Earlier in the season we saw some big schools of small mahi, but since they grow so fast, we should see nice schools of “gaffer” size fish (8 to 15 lbs.) here in August. We have already had some exciting trips in July with some nice schools of “gaffers”. Just the other day we found a turtle with fish ranging from 6 to 20 lbs. As we were catching them, a 40 lb. bull came shooting in trying to eat the squid we had used for bait that had slipped up the line. We were able to pitch him a live bait and go to fighting a monster. With these size fish in schools it will fill a fish box quickly! It definitely helps to keep all anglers calm and focused so everyone can move around to be able to avoid tangles, gaff fish, and keep pitching bait all at the same time. Controlled chaos is what I like to call it! August also makes me start thinking about some big blackfin tuna. Last year we had some great tuna fishing in August and I hope that stays true for this August. They are pound for pound one of toughest fighting fish you can have attached to your line. If conditions allow us to catch plenty of live bait and the tunas are on the humps it will be quite the show. They’ll start swarming right behind the boat after a net full of free bait fish goes overboard. Next we’ll cast a hook bait right into the middle of them and get a bite as soon as it hits the water. This is so much fun. When there is a good tuna bite, it is also a great time to try a fly rod out. Just hang on! Lastly let’s not forget about the mangrove snapper fishing. Some monster mangroves head to the reef and spawn in August. The best time for fishing for mangrove snappers is at night. I prefer to sleep at night, but if you get the chance to stay up late on a nice night there will probably be great mangrove fishing out on the reef!
